This week the MOMA (Museum of Modern Art) opened a new free indoor playspace for kids that’s a step above the usual arts drop-in lab.
Here are some of the features we love:
- DIFFERENT ACTIVITIES
The art activities are more unique than found at most drop-in arts places. This includes these activities:- A Magnetic Wall where kids can use pre-cut shapes to make characters, places and tell stories.
- A block area with simple building tools and more complex ones for older kids.
- A bookshelf stocked with shape themed books accessible to children but not dumbed down.
- Big beautiful iMac computers for exploring the museum’s website, collection, and doing kid’s activities
- A Piet Mondrian “Collage” area where kids use elements of his paintings to create their own.
- Pencils & paper to do their own drawings of shapes
- LIGHT & BRIGHT
Set in an alcove with floor to ceiling windows on the sculpture garden, this is a bright airy space, not the usual crammed dark closet. Sitting here is as much a pleasure for the parents as the kids! - COMFORTABLE SEATING
There are two chaise lounges affording a great view of the sculpture garden. I can easily see myself moving in and not leaving till dusk. - ADULT “ENTERTAINMENT”
No dancing girls, but they do have a wall of art books on popular artists for adults to read.
NOTE: Enter through the Education building on 54th Street and tell them you are going to the shape lab. If you are not a member, or going for a specific kid event, they will usually let you in anyway.
